Grace Read

GRACE READ

There was a young lady of Wight,
Who traveled much faster than light,
She departed one day,
In a relative way,
And arrived on the previous night.

Grace Read is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from New Hampshire. Born to a sound-engineer father and an artist mother, Grace claims to be a “child of DBX” due to both of her parents initially meeting at the professional sound company. “I was always surrounded by music and sound equipment. Mixers, giant speakers and subwoofers…my father would teach me their practical applications, how to make great sound. My mother would teach me how to take apart broken mixers and make art out of their insides. It was a nice balance.”

Grace spent her summers in the white mountains of northern New England, exploring and often falling out of trees. Her home-life encouraged her to be imaginative and expressive, surrounded by nature, art, music, and science fiction novels. She often references Star Trek at live shows, as well as being a self proclaimed collector of comic books and graphic novels. She began writing poetry and short stories at age 9, and was trained in classical piano, voice, and dance at age 12. Although recognized as a coloratura soprano, she enjoyed singing to blues and soul artists like Etta James and Otis Redding, eventually expanding her vocal range to a powerfully low, darker tone that she prefers to write and sing in today. She went on her first tour at 13 with a youth performance company, and continued to play and tour with various groups and bands throughout her teenage years.

In 2007, Grace was invited to tour with artists Kevin Devine and Jesse Lacey on an acoustic run of 12 dates in the US. She was received well by fans, and gained popularity despite having no official music released. She continued to play almost secretively for the next few years, releasing self-recorded demos online and making random live appearances (including a double bill with Howie Day at City winery in 2009, then again opening for William Fitzsimmons at the Highline Ballroom in 2010). Encouraged by friends and family to pursue a label or sponsor, she began collaborating with Jason Giummule (a friend and fellow musician) and formed a backing band to record demos of her new material.

Having heard these demos, a close friend showed them to Karl Groeger, founder and president of Brookvale Records, who immediately sought out Grace and offered her a deal. She signed with Brookvale in September, 2010, citing the labels “Attention to the music and knowledge of how to grow an artist organically”. She is set to release her first EP in early 2011 with a full length album to follow.
